Diya Mirza Biography
Dia was born in December 9, 1981 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her dad's name was Frank Handrich, a German National, and an Interior Designer by profession, and her mom, Deepa, is Bengali-speaking. Deepa and Frank separated when Dia was 6, and Frank passed away three years later. Deepa then married Ahmed Mirza. The family lived in Khairatabad near Hyderabad and she completed her schooling in Vidyaranya High School and in Nasr School. Her step-father passed away during 2004.
to Vidyaranya High School for Boys and Girls. This school was based on teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti. Later on, Dia Mirza attended Nasr School which is located in Khairatabad. Dia Mirza finished her graduation in Bachelors of Arts from Stanley Junior College, Andhra Pradesh Open University, Hyderabad. Dia Mirza's stint at the Femina Miss India 2000 won her the second runner up. There on, Dia was sent to Miss Asia Pacific 2000. After Lara Dutta winning the Miss Universe title and Priyanka Chopra taking home the Miss World title in the same year, Dia Mirza completed India's hat-trick of winning International Pageants in 2000 by winning the Miss Asia Pacific 2000 in Manila, Philippines on December 3, 2000. Dia Mirza became the first Indian contestant to win this title at the age of 29 years.
While Dia Mirza was still in college, Dia started working alongside. Dia was all of 16 years old that time. Dia Mirza worked at Dr. Neeraj's Multi Media Studio as Marketing Executive. Modeling came calling Dia Mirza and she appeared in various ad campaigns for Emami, Walls and Lipton. Although Dia Mirza planned on taking up modeling and Asia Pacific pageant and finishing off her graduation via correspondence, she later decided to finish her graduation first as she was sure that she will not be able to juggle everything together Dia Mirza speaks English, Urdu, Bengali, Hindi and Telugu fluently. Dia Mirza was first seen on the 70mm playing Reena opposite R. Madhavan in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Although the film didn't do very well at the box office, Dia Mirza was nominated at the Zee Cine Awards for Best Female Debut. In the year 2005, Dia Mirza was seen in Parineeta which was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Also, Dia Mirza was seen in Sonu Nigam's Kajara Nite video for Kajara Mohabbat Wala. Dia Mirza is also known for her roles in Fight Club and Dus. In Acid Factory, Dia Mirza played a femme fatale and a gangster alongside five guys. Dia Mirza has been actively involved with Spastics Society of India and Cancer Patients Aid Association. Also, Dia Mirza has been working in HIV awareness with Andhra government, PETA, prevention of female foeticide, CRY and NDTV Greenathon. Dia Mirza is an avid reader and loves to write as well. Dia Mirza also loves to act in theater, painting, horse riding, etc. Dia Mirza was a guest writer for The Hindustan Times and has written a number of articles. On board in the Coca Cola foundation, Dia Mirza will help for development of rural India. Dia Mirza has recently adopted two cheetah cubs. Dia adopted them from the Prince of Wales zoological park which is in Lucknow. Dia Mirza actively and publicly supported the Narmada Bachao Andolan. BJP angered with this step had led a protest march against Dia Mirza. Also in support of the Narmada Bachao Andolan was fellow actor Aamir Khan. Dia Mirza, along with Sahil Singha, her boyfriend and Zayed Khan, her good friend started Born Free Entertainment, a production house. Love Breakups Zindagi is being made under the banner.
She was introverted and unhappy as a child, and it was her parents, especially her mom, who instilled self-confidence and assisted her to break free from the barriers of low self-esteem.
At the age of 16, after completing her 10th standard, she got a job with Sriven Multi-Tech in Hyderabad. This job paved her way to modeling assignments with Lipton, Emami amongst others. With this exposure she was encouraged to participate in the 2000 Femina Miss India Beauty Pageant, which she did, came up the second runner-up and won three titles namely Femina Miss India-Pacific, Sony Viewer's Choice Award, and Miss Beautiful Smile. She went on to be crowned Miss Asia-Pacific on December 2, 2000 at Manila, making her the second Indian to win this award after a gap of 29 years.
Dia wanted to complete her graduation in Arts by correspondence, but decided to postpone it as it was becoming difficult to juggle between the Miss Asia Pacific Competition, modeling assignments, traveling and training. She was assisted by Sabira Merchant on diction and etiquette; diet with Anjali Mukherjee; gymnasium and physical fitness with Talwalkars; clothes from Ritu Kumar and Hemant Trivedi; skin care with Dr. Jamuna Pai; and make-up and hair-care from Bharat and Doris Godambe.
